Late weaning will not affect transmission from sows to piglets. Those sows which are viremic will deliver viremic piglets right from birth.
The problem with late weaning is that increases the chances of infection after birth due to fostering practices, and therefore it is also increasing the risk of maintaining the virus recirculating in the farrowing house, especially when not strict all in – all out by batch is performed.
Any practice increasing the chance of contact between different piglet ages will help virus to recirculate and remain in that particular area of the herd.
